My Story
I grew up near Milwaukee, WI, and migrated to Colorado after I finished my B.S. in psychology and zoology at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Having endured heartbreakingly frigid winters, I moved to Colorado knowing that there was a lot of sunshine and some of the finest rock climbing in the world here.
After a year in Colorado, I discovered Seven Bowls School of Nutrition, Nourishment, and Healing in Longmont, and began attending what was then a three-year Integrated Clinical Nutritional Therapy program . From an early age, I knew that I wanted to be a therapist – a psychologist, I thought. But through my experience with a handful of illnesses, I learned what a prominent role nutrition plays in keeping us functional and vibrant.
The story behind why I became a nutritionist begins in Mexico on a climbing trip many years ago, where my intestines became the home of a parasite. I dutifully medicated myself with antibiotics, which quickly led to an intense ear infection. After the infection subsided, I became almost constantly dizzy, no doctor or MRI could explain to me why. For 2 dizzy years, I also battled endometriosis, depression, fatigue, Candida overgrowth, (what I now know of as) food sensitivities, and finally a mysterious flashing and blindness in my left eye that lasted 6 weeks.
In my desperation I wanted answers. I began devouring information about vitamins, minerals, hormones, food sensitivities, and the effects of stress on the body. Slowly but surely, by eating whole foods, taking the necessary supplements, and reducing my stress level, I regained my sight and my general health. That is where my education began. My tenure at Seven Bowls expanded my breadth of knowledge immensely, and guided me through my own personal transformation into a much healthier and more content person. I hope to be fortunate enough to stay in Boulder, climbing and practicing indefinitely.
